The Hungry Ghost Festival is taking place in Phuket

If you’re on the island right now, head to Phuket Town — Por Tor celebrations are taking place here until September 10.

According to tradition, during the seventh lunar month, the gates to the spirit world open and the souls of ancestors return to the world of the living. Offerings are prepared for them, incense is burned, and ritual paper offerings are set alight.

The main symbol of the festival is the bright red Ang Ku — turtle-shaped cakes. Red represents good luck, while the turtle symbolizes longevity. Some of these festive cakes are so large that they have to be carried by two people.

• August 31 – September 10 — Por Tor Kong Temple in the Bang Niew area
• September 1 — Phuket Thai Hua Museum on Krabi Road
• September 2 — Takua Pa Road area

Admission is free. It’s best to come in the late afternoon, when the red lanterns are lit and the main ceremonies begin.

Por Tor is not a tourist show, but a living religious tradition. Dress respectfully, avoid disturbing the rituals, and always ask permission before taking close-up photos of people.
